Celeste's voice was soft enough to avoid drawing an audience. "You can have your opinions after the honeymoon," she told Hannah. "Today is about a family becoming stable." Hannah answered that stability did not require a child to memorize praise for a school she had never visited. Celeste glanced at Lucy, whose face had gone pale. For a moment the polished smile vanished. "Your mother enjoys making scenes," she said. Then she turned away, leaving the sentence hanging where Lucy could hear it.

Hannah decided to stay for the ceremony because Lucy asked to watch her father. Daniel stood at the altar looking handsome and hollow-eyed. He caught Hannah's gaze once and looked away. The officiant spoke about trust, patience, and the responsibilities of marriage. Hannah could hear the garden fountain through the open windows. Across the aisle Martin Vale sat with Edward Whitmore, both men checking their phones as though waiting for a transaction to clear.

When the reception began, Lucy was taken to a children's table near the ballroom sound equipment. Hannah had stepped away to speak with Priya by phone. The lawyer had just received a message from Elaine Foster: someone attempted to rush the trust's property sale that morning, using the same suspect certification. Elaine had demanded a hold. She also said Margaret's attorney was en route to the estate with documents the family had been denied access to.

Hannah returned to find Lucy beside the laptop. The child had watched a technician connect a music player and recognized the small port used for her birthday recordings. An older cousin had offered to help her play a song for Daddy. Lucy thought the recording might finally make him understand. Hannah called her name, but the child pressed the key before she could reach her. Celeste's recorded voice flooded the ballroom. "Once the wedding is over, she goes to the boarding school. He already signed the papers."

Caroline asked the staff to give Lucy space. No one challenged the instruction. The child stared at the patterned carpet until Hannah suggested they count the roses visible through the window. She paused and listened carefully.

Guests turned in astonishment. Celeste moved to shut off the sound. Hannah blocked her path. The cousin backed away, frightened by what he had accidentally helped accomplish. When Martin's voice mentioned the trustee, the room erupted in whispers. The recording ended with Margaret's plea: "Please don't use my signature again." Daniel stepped down from the dais. Celeste demanded security remove Hannah and Lucy. Instead, Samuel Reed entered with Margaret's attorney, carrying the gray envelope. "Before anyone removes this child," the attorney said, "there is a document every adult in this room ought to see."
