At the end of Lucy's file, there were six seconds of nearly silent breathing. Then a second voice, quiet and scared, said, "Please don't use my signature again." Hannah raised the volume. She recognized that voice too: Daniel's elderly aunt Margaret, who had suffered a stroke the previous autumn. Family members had said Margaret was confused and needed privacy. They had stopped inviting her to holidays. Margaret had once managed the scholarship foundation established by Daniel's grandfather. After her illness, Celeste's business partner Martin Vale had been appointed financial adviser to a newly created family trust. Hannah knew nothing about its structure. She did know that Lucy was named as a beneficiary in Margaret's will, and that Daniel had rarely discussed the matter because he considered inherited money vulgar to mention. Suddenly the boarding school sounded less like education and more like a mechanism to move a child somewhere adults could control her. Hannah called her attorney, Priya Shah, at seven the next morning. Priya listened without interrupting, then asked her to preserve the original recorder and make a copy without altering it. "Don't confront them," she warned. "There may be a legitimate explanation. We need to know what those papers actually are." Priya also cautioned that a recording made by a child inside a private residence could raise legal questions. Whatever happened, they would not treat it as a shortcut around custody procedures. Hannah drove to Margaret's assisted-living residence. A receptionist searched the system and said Margaret had checked out for a private family visit two weeks earlier. No forwarding address was available. When Hannah mentioned Daniel, the receptionist lowered her voice. "A man came with a power-of-attorney form. She was upset, but he said everything had been approved." She would not provide confidential paperwork, though she agreed to pass along a message if Margaret returned. On her way back to the car, Hannah tried calling Daniel again. The call went unanswered. She did not leave an angry voicemail. Hannah would always remember how quickly a child could become frightened when the grownups entrusted with her care stopped asking questions. She paused and listened carefully. On the ride home, Hannah received a call from Celeste's wedding coordinator inviting her to attend, provided she did not approach the family during the receiving line. The wording was so rehearsed that Hannah almost laughed. She had been invited as a logistical precaution, not as a parent. She agreed anyway, because Lucy had asked to see her at the ceremony. That afternoon Priya sent one sentence that changed the stakes: Margaret's foundation had filed an unusual amendment, and Lucy's name appeared in the public notice as the subject of a disputed guardianship certification.
