Daniel spent Tuesday morning searching his brokerage archive for Project Willow. He found a presentation he had prepared in good faith when the plan was still a conventional hotel expansion. The numbers assumed investors would acquire the riverfront parcel at fair value, after negotiations with every owner. Six months later, a revised spreadsheet supplied by Martin lowered the proposed purchase price dramatically and classified one beneficiary's interest as "controllable through guardian assent." Daniel had noticed the change, but Martin called it a drafting shortcut.

Daniel delivered both versions to Priya and Elaine. Neither promised that his cooperation would excuse his negligence. He understood that. The documents showed the development plan had drifted from negotiation toward exploitation, but they also showed Daniel had profited from continuing to promote it. He told Hannah about the fee he stood to receive if the deal closed. It was large enough to pay off his debts. She looked at him without speaking. That silence was worse than accusation.

At the hotel, Edward Whitmore convened a meeting of his senior team. He wanted Project Willow saved, the wedding scandal contained, and the family's donors reassured. Martin proposed blaming every disputed paper on a junior administrator. Edward said little. Celeste demanded that Daniel return to the estate and publicly defend her. She told him a marriage could survive an unpleasant rumor but not disloyalty. Daniel asked whether she had ever intended Lucy to live with them. "Of course," Celeste replied. "When it was convenient." The careless phrase destroyed whatever hope he still had of reconciling.

Hannah focused on Lucy. The child's teacher reported that she had begun asking classmates whether parents could sign papers that made children disappear. A school counselor offered sessions to help her regain a sense of predictability. Hannah accepted. She also asked the teacher not to discuss the public video, which had reached some families through social media. Lucy needed friends and reading lessons, not a room full of people treating her like the star of a scandal.

A camera crew waited outside the building, but Hannah chose another exit. She chose the quieter road, which demanded much more patience than public anger.

By Wednesday, Elaine had secured a temporary freeze on the contested trust transaction pending review. No property sale would occur without authorization. But money had already moved. The ledger showed several payments into a contractor account called Oak Bridge Consulting. Samuel recognized the address: it was a mailbox above the same hardware store where he lived. Someone had used a familiar location to make a false business seem ordinary. Samuel was offended, then worried. If the arrangement was deliberate, the next step might be to make him the convenient suspect.
