Ethan consulted Lily's therapist and the family court order before responding to Vivian's request. Vivian was not Lily's legal parent, and the child had expressed fear of seeing her. Ethan declined any direct contact while the criminal case remained active. He did not frame the decision as punishment Lily had to understand. He told his daughter simply that she would not be required to meet someone who had frightened her. Lily asked whether Vivian was angry. Ethan said Vivian was responsible for managing her own feelings. That answer seemed to relieve the child more than any promise about court outcomes. Claire recovered physically, but she struggled with the sound of locked doors. She began carrying a spare key even when she did not need one. Her sister Hannah suggested counseling; Claire agreed because she wanted to be present for Lily without pretending the incident had not affected her. She and Ethan worked with a mediator on practical parenting arrangements. Neither considered renewing their marriage. They could be reliable co-parents without rewriting the reasons they separated. One evening Lily asked to see the swimming pool again. Ethan was alarmed. Her therapist advised against forcing the visit or forbidding it simply because adults were afraid. After discussing what Lily wanted, they arranged to visit the closed estate with an independent site manager. The pool had been drained for repairs. From the deck Lily could see the rectangular hatch on the bottom, now opened and labeled as a maintenance fitting. The technician explained in age-appropriate words that it was not a door people could go through. The room where Claire had been locked was beside the pool, under the surrounding walkway, and it had been permanently fitted with emergency exits. Lily examined a map and nodded. “So Mommy wasn't under all that water.” “No,” Claire said. “You heard me from the room over there.” Lily considered this before asking whether she had been wrong to point at the pool. Claire knelt beside her. “You heard me, and you told Daddy. That's what mattered.” Lily began to cry, not from fear this time but from the exhaustion of finally having the complicated picture explained. The empty pool looked less frightening than Ethan had expected. Without water, the blue tiles were ordinary and the maintenance opening was clearly too small for a person. An engineer described the location of the sound pipe with a pencil. Nobody asked Lily to reenact the moment she heard her mother. Ethan held them both until she asked for lunch. On their way out, the site manager handed Claire a copy of the repaired floor plan. On it, someone had marked the old ventilation shaft with a small handwritten star.
