By evening the police had separated the relevant witnesses. Teresa described the keypad change and showed invoices for unauthorized work in the pool gallery. A server remembered Vivian telling guests that Claire was not permitted on the grounds, even though no one had seen any legal order excluding her. The wedding photographer supplied unedited images showing Claire entering the estate before noon and Adrian guiding her toward the service building. In one photograph Vivian stood directly behind them, watching. Adrian's attorney argued that these images proved nothing about a locked door. Ethan agreed they were not enough by themselves. He wanted the investigation to hold up under questioning, not collapse because everyone was angry. Lily, meanwhile, stayed with Claire's sister, Aunt Hannah, and refused to put on her shoes. She was afraid another grown-up would lead her away from her mother. Hannah made cocoa and placed the child's pink sandals by the couch. “You can leave them there,” she said. “You are not in trouble.” Lily asked whether Daddy had jumped into the pool because he believed her. Hannah answered yes. Lily then asked why the grown-ups had not believed her the first time. Hannah had no comfortable answer. At the hospital, Claire told investigators about the tapping. The lower gallery carried sound through a ventilation shaft toward a drain grille by the pool. When she heard Lily calling from above, Claire struck a copper pipe with the heel of her shoe. She knew her daughter would recognize the pattern. The noise traveled intermittently, depending on the pumps. The loosened hatch in the pool was a separate matter. Years earlier it had covered an unused service opening connected to a narrow cable chase, too small for anyone to crawl through. Claire had found a dry access panel behind a shelf in the storage room and slipped a sealed plastic document tube inside. The tube had traveled only a short distance. She had pushed it until it lodged near the submerged hatch, hoping it could be recovered without her captors noticing. Ethan remembered the black cable he had seen and realized it was not part of the original equipment. Someone had recently tried to retrieve the tube from the pool side. One guest had taken a photograph of Lily beside the bridesmaids before the ceremony. In it her eyes were red and her mouth was pressed shut. Nobody had asked why. Still, the image helped establish when the child's distress began. The evidence might still be there. At eight that night, the detective called him with news: a specialist diving team had secured the hatch, and they had found something inside the cable chase. But it was not Claire's document tube.
