Ethan rode in the ambulance because Claire's sister had agreed to collect Lily from Teresa, whom the child trusted. He watched the wedding venue vanish through the rear window, its white flowers still immaculate beside the police vehicles. Claire explained between medical questions that she had gone to the estate that morning to stop a document from being signed. Ethan remembered the envelope Vivian had placed on the breakfast table before the ceremony. She had called it a simple consolidation of household accounts and said it could wait until after the vows. Claire shook her head at the description. The envelope contained instructions for transferring Ethan's voting shares in Harbor House, a small company that owned sixty apartments near the city center. Ethan and Claire had built the project before they separated. Their agreement required joint approval before major transfers, partly to protect residents from sudden displacement. Vivian had insisted the transfer was a harmless restructuring. Ethan had been prepared to read it later. Claire said the proposed buyer was a holding company linked to Adrian. For months, she had been hearing from residents that promised repairs had not happened, even as the estate's investment arm claimed to have paid for them. She had requested invoices and discovered the same contractor billed repeatedly for inspections nobody could remember taking place. “That doesn't mean someone could imprison you,” Ethan said. Claire closed her eyes. “I came here with the records. Adrian told me we could talk in the office. Vivian was waiting.” Claire had refused to hand over the original documents. Adrian took her bag, and Vivian kept Lily busy with wedding photographs. Claire remembered being pushed into the service corridor, a door closing, and the click of a padlock. A police officer later took her initial statement at the hospital. Ethan did not interrupt with accusations he could not yet prove. He was beginning to see the difference between what Claire knew and what he had merely believed about his best friend. When a doctor came to examine Claire's knee, Ethan went into the hall and called the wedding planner. He asked that nobody destroy the seating charts, photographs, access logs, or discarded envelopes. Then he called the bank and instructed its legal department that he would authorize no share transfer. Ethan thought about the harmless conversations that had helped Vivian gain his confidence. She had remembered his coffee order and offered to coordinate school pickups. She had spoken warmly about making a family. The lawyer asked for the written documents. Ethan realized he had never once read them. He had been about to promise his future to Vivian while signing away the protection he and Claire had promised strangers.
