Firefighters arrived within minutes, followed by two police officers and an ambulance crew. The ceremony had dissolved into an uneasy crowd under umbrellas, although the sky was clear. Ethan wanted to break the door himself. The first firefighter asked him to stand back while they checked for electrical and flooding hazards; the gallery ran beside active pumps, and the loose underwater hatch suggested an alteration no one had documented. Teresa produced an outdated floor plan from a locked cabinet in her office. It showed a narrow passage around the pool's north wall, ending in a storage room and two electrical closets. Adrian called the plan obsolete. A firefighter compared it with the building's newer inspection records and found that the gallery had been marked permanently sealed five years earlier. “Then why did someone install a keypad yesterday?” Teresa asked. The officer wrote down her statement. An emergency access key from the estate's master set opened the outer door, but the storage room beyond had been secured with a padlock threaded through the handle. Behind it, a woman answered when Ethan called her name. “Ethan? Is Lily safe?” It was Claire. The firefighter ordered everyone clear while a crew member checked the door frame and the air in the room. Once it was safe, they removed the padlock and opened the door. Claire stumbled forward barefoot, her wrists reddened from struggling with a plastic tie she had managed to loosen. Her white blouse was damp with sweat. Ethan caught her before she fell. He had spent two years learning to be cordial with a woman he could no longer live with. Now he felt only terror at how close she had come to disappearing. Claire looked past him. “They took my phone. Did they get the file?” Ethan said he did not know what file she meant. At the entrance, Adrian was speaking rapidly to an officer. “She is unstable,” he claimed. “She forced her way into restricted property.” Claire flinched at the sound of his voice. “He locked me in,” she said. A younger officer moved between them. The paramedic placed a blanket over Claire's shoulders and asked whether she had been injured. Claire said she had struck her knee and had been trapped for nearly four hours. She also said the air had grown hotter when the pumps started. Someone had already slipped on the wet tiles during Ethan's dive. When she finally saw the ambulance lights, the effort left her face. Still. Then, before she let the paramedic help her to the ambulance, she took Ethan's hand. “The thing you saw in the pool isn't a door to this room,” she whispered. “It's where I hid the proof.”
