The first thing Daniel Bennett noticed was the silence.

A moment earlier, the Grand Rosemont Hotel had been filled with music, whispered conversations, and the soft clinking of champagne glasses. Nearly two hundred guests had gathered beneath crystal chandeliers to watch him marry Victoria Hale, a successful real estate developer whose elegance and confidence had become familiar features of his life.

Now everyone was staring at the flower wall.

Daniel knelt beside Emily Foster, struggling to understand what he was seeing.

She was thirty-four, with long blonde hair tangled around her shoulders and a gray cardigan stained with dust. Her wrists had been secured with plastic restraints, and a strip of silver tape covered her mouth.

"Call 911!" Daniel shouted.

His best man, Michael Grant, immediately reached for his phone.

Daniel carefully removed the tape while another guest brought scissors to free Emily's wrists.

She gasped for air.

"Don't let her leave," she whispered.

Daniel leaned closer.

"Who?"

Emily lifted one trembling finger.

Victoria.

The bride stood several feet away in her off-the-shoulder satin gown, her beautiful face frozen in disbelief.

"Daniel, I can explain."

He looked at her.

"Explain why my sister-in-law was tied up behind our wedding flowers."

Victoria took a step forward.

"She's dangerous. She came here to ruin everything."

Emily began shaking.

"No. She brought me here."

Daniel looked between them.

It had been nearly two years since Emily vanished after a bitter family disagreement involving his late wife's estate. Police found her abandoned car outside Pittsburgh, but no evidence established what happened afterward.

Daniel had spent months searching.

Victoria was one of the people who comforted him when the search failed.

She told him Emily had probably run away to escape financial problems and family responsibilities.

Eventually, Daniel believed her.

Now Emily was lying at his feet, alive.

Lily approached cautiously.

"Daddy?"

He turned.

The little girl held a small pink ribbon.

"I heard Aunt Emily crying."

Daniel pulled his daughter into his arms.

"You did the right thing, sweetheart."

Lily looked toward Victoria.

"She told me not to go near the flowers."

Daniel felt something cold settle in his stomach.

Behind him, the hotel manager arrived with two security employees. They began moving guests away from the stage while emergency dispatchers instructed them to preserve the scene.

Victoria turned toward the exit.

Michael stepped aside to allow arriving police officers through the doors.

And when she saw their uniforms, Victoria whispered something only Daniel heard.

"You have no idea what Emily took from us."
