Daniel spent the next four hours inside the hotel answering questions.
By the time police allowed him to leave, the wedding had been canceled, the ballroom was sealed for examination, and every photograph from the ceremony seemed to have reached social media.
But Daniel barely noticed.
He took Lily home, called Claire's mother, and asked her to stay with the child while he went to the hospital.
At Allegheny Medical Center, he found Emily under observation in a private room.
Two officers were stationed nearby.
Emily looked painfully thin, but her expression softened when Daniel entered.
"Where's Lily?"
"Home with her grandmother."
"Is she safe?"
"Yes."
Emily closed her eyes.
"Thank God."
Daniel pulled a chair beside her bed.
"I thought you were gone."
"I know."
"Why didn't you contact us?"
Emily looked toward the window.
"Because I couldn't."
He waited.
After several minutes, she began explaining.
Two years earlier, Emily discovered that several properties belonging to Bennett Construction had been transferred into companies connected to Victoria's investment group.
The transactions were disguised as ordinary restructuring arrangements.
Some documents carried Daniel's signature.
Others appeared to have been authorized by Claire's trust.
But Emily knew the independent trustee had never approved them.
She confronted Victoria privately.
Victoria denied wrongdoing and accused Emily of trying to control Daniel's life.
Emily then contacted a forensic accountant and began gathering records.
Before she could complete the review, someone broke into her apartment.
Her laptop disappeared.
A folder containing financial documents was taken.
The next morning, she received photographs of Lily walking to preschool.
Alongside the images was a message warning that the child would suffer if Emily continued investigating.
Daniel felt sick.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I tried."
Emily looked directly at him.
"Victoria intercepted the message."
Daniel remembered a week when Victoria claimed Emily had sent a cruel letter accusing him of being an unfit father.
He never saw the original.
Victoria showed him selected screenshots.
He believed her.
Emily's voice shook.
"After that, I arranged to meet an investigator. I never reached the meeting."
She described being approached in a parking garage by two people who claimed to work for a private security firm.
They told her Lily had been injured and that Daniel needed her.
Emily entered their vehicle.
When she realized the story was false, the doors were already locked.
Daniel struggled to breathe.
"Where did they take you?"
"Several places."
Her eyes filled.
"I kept track of what I could."
She reached beneath her hospital blanket and touched a small scar near her wrist.
"But I never stopped looking for a way to get back."
Daniel took her hand.
"Why bring you to the wedding?"
Emily stared at him.
"Because I escaped three days ago."
She swallowed.
"And Victoria knew I was coming to stop the marriage."
