The paramedics arrived within eight minutes.

Emily was dehydrated, frightened, and suffering from bruising around her wrists. She was conscious enough to answer basic questions but struggled whenever someone mentioned Victoria.

Daniel wanted to accompany her to the hospital.

An officer asked him to remain briefly for a statement about the scene.

He agreed, still holding Lily close.

Victoria was speaking with another officer near the entrance.

Her attorney had already been contacted.

She insisted Emily had entered the hotel voluntarily and that any accusation of unlawful confinement was a misunderstanding.

The officers took statements separately and began preserving available security recordings.

Daniel watched them secure the flower-wall compartment.

Behind its decorative panels was a narrow maintenance area usually used for lighting equipment and access to the ballroom's movable partitions.

Someone had concealed the opening beneath hundreds of carefully arranged flowers.

Lily pointed toward the damaged arrangement.

"I saw her hand earlier, Daddy."

Daniel looked at her.

"When?"

"Before everybody came in. I was looking for my ribbon."

She explained that she had wandered near the stage while the wedding planner prepared the ceremony.

A faint knocking sound came from behind the flowers.

At first, Lily thought someone was playing a game.

Then she heard a woman whisper her name.

"Lily. Please help me."

The little girl became frightened and ran toward Victoria.

She told her future stepmother someone was trapped behind the wall.

Victoria gripped Lily's shoulders.

"That isn't funny. Stop making up stories."

Lily tried to explain.

Victoria told her she would ruin the wedding if she repeated the claim.

The little girl remained silent for several minutes.

But when the ceremony began and she heard the knocking again, she ran toward the flowers.

Daniel listened with growing horror.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Lily lowered her head.

"Victoria said you'd be mad."

He held her tighter.

"I would never be angry with you for helping somebody."

The hotel security director approached.

"Mr. Bennett, there's something you should know."

Daniel looked up.

"One of our cameras shows a woman matching Emily's description being brought into the service entrance this morning."

"By whom?"

"We're still reviewing it."

The director hesitated.

"But whoever escorted her used a temporary access badge issued to the wedding production team."

Daniel stared toward Victoria.

She was still speaking calmly with her attorney.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unfamiliar number.

Don't believe everything Emily tells you. Claire's death was never an accident.

Daniel read it twice.

And suddenly the nightmare unfolding around him became something far larger than a ruined wedding.
