“He said the kid told him, ‘Proof is the only thing they can’t take away.’”

No one spoke.

“You’re the reason I have a case, son.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Hollis gave me his statement.”

Doyle lifted the folder.

“And that statement gave me probable cause for a warrant I’ve been begging a judge to sign since last spring.”

She closed the folder.

Then she held out her hand.

“So I would very much like to see the box.”

For a moment, Ethan didn’t move.

He had carried that box like it contained his entire life.

Because in many ways, it did.

Every photograph.

Every note.

Every recording.

Every piece of proof he had collected when nobody believed him.

Now a stranger with a badge was asking him to hand it over.

And every instinct carved into him by seven years of disappointment screamed the same thing.

Don’t.

They’ll lose it.

They’ll bury it.

They’ll make it disappear like everything else.

Ethan looked at Jack.

“It’s your call,” Jack said.

His voice was calm.

“Nobody makes it for you.”

“Not me.”

“Not her.”

“Not anybody.”

The choice belonged to Ethan.

For most of his life, choices had belonged to everyone else.

His stepfather decided when he stayed.

His stepfather decided when he left.

Other people decided whether he was worth helping.

Whether he deserved a door opening.

Whether he mattered.

But this time, the decision was his.

Ethan looked down at the box.

Then back at Agent Doyle.

“It’s a copy,” he said.

Everyone looked surprised.

Ethan opened the box and handed it over.

“The real one is in a safe deposit box in town.”

Jack stared at him.

“You opened a safe deposit box?”

Ethan nodded.

“With what money?”

Ethan hesitated.

“Jack’s signature and eleven of the fifty dollars I had left.”

Jack blinked.

“Eleven dollars?”

Ethan looked slightly embarrassed.

“I was going to tell you.”

He paused.

“I just didn’t want you to have to lie if somebody asked.”

“You can’t tell what you don’t know.”

Jack stared at him.

The kid who had arrived with nothing.

The kid who had slept on a cot in his storage room.

The kid who had been abandoned by almost everyone he trusted.

Had somehow thought ahead enough to protect the truth.

“You opened a safe deposit box with eleven dollars two weeks after moving into my garage?”

Ethan looked down.

“Twelve.”

Jack frowned.

“What?”

“I found a dollar in the couch in the storage room.”

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then Padre laughed.

A real laugh.

He laughed so hard he had to sit down against one of the motorcycles.

Doyle didn’t laugh.

She was already moving through the contents of the box.

And the more she looked, the more her professional expression began changing.

Photos.

Dates.

Vehicle information.

Recorded conversations.

Written statements.

Then she stopped.

Her eyes widened.
