Then a second SUV began appearing across the road.

It did not approach.

It did not leave anyone behind.

It simply parked there.

Watching.

The person inside had no idea the kid he was watching had a phone, a steady hand, and a reason to memorize faces.

One night, Jack found Ethan hunched over the growing box beneath the workbench.

“You should stop.”

Ethan looked up.

“This isn’t your fight,” Jack continued. “You owe me a clean floor, not your safety.”

Ethan lowered his eyes to the papers in front of him.

“You let me in when nine people shut the door.”

Jack said nothing.

“You think I’m going to let some guy in a suit run you off the only place that ever felt like...”

Ethan stopped himself.

“Felt like what?” Jack asked.

The boy was quiet for a long time.

“Like somebody was glad I was around.”

Jack had to leave the room.

He told himself it was because he needed to lock the bay.

It wasn’t.

The breaking point came on a Friday afternoon.

It came fast.

Four men arrived this time.

They were not wearing suits.

They were the other kind.

The kind who did not need to dress politely to make a threat.

They walked directly into the open garage bay like they already owned the deed.

The man leading them dropped a folder of papers onto Jack’s workbench.

“Sign it.”

Jack didn’t touch the folder.

“Mr. Caldwell’s done being patient.”

“Get off my property,” Jack said.

The man smiled.

“Or what, old man?”

What happened next took only seconds.

One of the men swept his arm across the tool wall.

Two months of Ethan’s careful organization crashed onto the concrete.

Wrenches.

Sockets.

Screwdrivers.

Metal striking metal.

Another man kicked over a stack of rims.

Ethan stepped forward.

He was not trying to fight.

He was only trying to put himself between the chaos and Jack.

The biggest of the four men shoved him hard in the chest.

Ethan went backward and hit the concrete.

The garage went silent.

Jack moved toward the men.

Something dangerous woke behind his eyes.

Ethan lay on the floor with scraped palms, breathing hard.

He knew that look.

And before Jack could take another step, Ethan said one word.

“Wait.”

Jack stopped.

Ethan slowly pushed himself upright.

He wiped his palms against his jeans.

Instead of swinging at anyone, he walked toward the workbench.

Then he reached underneath it.

He pulled out the box.

“You want to know what I’ve been doing in this garage for two months?”

His voice did not shake anymore.

“Photos. Recordings. Plates. Dates.”

He looked directly at the men.

“Every threat.”

He opened the box.

“Every brick.”

He lifted one of the folders.

“Every customer you scared off, with their statements signed.”

The men stopped smiling.

“The phone call where your boss’s man mentioned a little girl’s school.”

Ethan raised the box slightly.

“I’ve got all of it.”

The lead man stared at him.

“And it’s not in this box.”

The man’s expression tightened.

“This box is a copy.”

Ethan’s voice remained calm.

“The real evidence is somewhere four men standing in a garage can’t reach.”

The lead man’s face changed.

“You’re bluffing.”

“Maybe.”
