“And a kid who built a fortress out of a box while everybody thought he was just sweeping floors.”

Ethan’s eyes burned.

“It’s not fair.”

“No.”

Jack nodded.

“It isn’t.”

“But fair isn’t the game.”

He looked toward the road.

“Fair is what they want you waiting for while they win.”

“The game is who is still standing when the dust settles.”

Jack looked around.

“And son?”

“We’ve got more people still standing than they will ever have.”

“They just don’t know it yet.”

Ethan wiped his face.

Then suddenly his expression changed.

“No.”

Jack looked at him.

“No?”

Ethan shook his head.

“If they arrest you, even for one night, the story becomes something else.”

He started thinking faster.

“Biker arrested for running a chop shop.”

“Former convict involved in criminal activity.”

“Even if we beat it later, that headline stays.”

He looked at Doyle.

“Once people believe the lie, the truth has to fight twice as hard.”

Doyle studied him.

“So what are you thinking?”

Ethan looked around the lot.

At the riders.

At the deputy.

At Jack.

Then he reached into his pocket.

“The first SUV.”

Everyone became quiet.

“When Vane threatened me, I didn’t just write it down.”

“I recorded it.”

Jack looked surprised.

Ethan continued.

“Every single one.”

“I saved everything.”

Doyle stepped closer.

“You recorded the conversation?”

Ethan nodded.

“His face.”

“The Caldwell logo on his cuff.”

“The threat.”

“Everything.”

Doyle’s expression changed.

“That’s admissible.”

She nodded.

“You were part of the conversation.”

“That recording could matter.”

Ethan looked toward the garage.

“I don’t want to wait for a courtroom.”

“Jack has an hour.”

“I want people to know the truth before the lie gets there first.”

He looked at Jack.

“You told me the world remembers people who give without keeping score.”

“So let’s remind them.”

“Let’s tell them who you are.”

“The man who let a soaked kid sleep in his garage.”

“The man who fixed bikes for people who couldn’t pay.”

“The man two hundred people rode here for.”

Then Ethan looked toward the evidence box.

“And then let’s show them who is trying to take it away.”

The lot became quiet.

Padre slowly nodded.

“The kid’s right.”

He looked around.

“We’ve got brothers who run pages with hundreds of thousands of followers.”

“Veterans groups.”

“Riders in forty states.”

He smiled slightly.

“You put a homeless kid, an honest old man, and two hundred motorcycles in front of people’s eyes...”

“And by morning, nobody is quietly signing anything.”

Doyle lifted a hand.

“I cannot be part of leaking an active investigation.”

Ethan nodded.

“You don’t have to.”

“You do your job.”
