She looked toward Ethan.
“He filed reports claiming Sullivan has been running stolen parts through the garage for years.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“That’s a lie.”
“I know.”
“You know.”
“Jack knows.”
“But a warrant doesn’t care what’s true at first.”
“It cares what’s filed.”
Ethan went quiet.
Doyle continued.
“Caldwell has falsified invoices.”
“A paid witness.”
“Enough paperwork to make the accusation look real.”
She shook her head.
“He’s been preparing this.”
The realization settled over Ethan.
“He’s trying to arrest Jack.”
“Yes.”
“And while Jack is gone, he takes the garage.”
Doyle nodded.
“He creates chaos.”
“He damages Jack’s reputation.”
“And he makes the evidence disappear.”
Ethan stared out the window.
A man like Caldwell didn’t need to win honestly.
He only needed to make sure the truth arrived too late.
“How long do we have?”
Doyle checked the time.
“If I had to guess?”
She sighed.
“An hour.”
“If Caldwell’s friend in the DA’s office moves quickly, the warrant could be signed tonight.”
The car became silent.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Drive faster.”
They reached the garage moments later.
Ethan jumped out before the car fully stopped.
He ran toward Jack.
The words came quickly.
The warrant.
The false accusations.
The stolen parts story.
The DA connection.
The time they had left.
Jack listened.
Ethan watched his face carefully.
Waiting for fear.
Waiting for panic.
It never came.
Jack stood still.
Then he took a slow breath.
“Okay.”
Ethan stared.
“Okay?”
“Yes.”
“Jack, they are going to arrest you for something you didn’t do.”
Jack nodded.
“And twenty years ago, they arrested me for something I did do.”
The words stopped Ethan.
Jack looked toward the garage.
“I spent fifteen years paying for my mistakes.”
“I came out with nothing.”
“No family.”
“No future.”
“But you know what came after?”
He looked around.
“Padre.”
“The club.”
“This garage.”
“You.”
Jack placed both hands on Ethan’s shoulders.
“So if they want to put me in a cell for something I didn’t do?”
He shrugged.
“Fine.”
Ethan shook his head.
“That’s not fine.”
Jack looked directly at him.
“This time, I’m not coming out to nothing.”
He pointed toward the lot.
“I’m coming out to two hundred people.”
“A federal agent.”
