The clinic billing office had a window and a stack of claims. Alicia was good at claims. Julian had been good at finding the folder she had already found. The first coffee was twenty minutes and a joke about the copier. The joke was nothing. Nothing stacked. By the second month he knew Miles’s name and Daniel’s site and the drawer where the mugs were. Knowing the drawer was the line she crossed without a speech. She crossed it on a Saturday with the truck gone and the birthday party until four. Four was a clock. She hated clocks after. Helen said clocks are how people lie to kitchens. Alicia said the kitchen found out anyway. Helen said children are thorough. Thorough was Miles in a sleeve. Alicia did not laugh. Later she did, once, in the car, and the laugh was not kind to herself. Kind could wait.
Daniel’s site was a school addition, dust and overtime. He came home with drywall on the henley and a tiredness he thought was the whole story of the year. The year had a second story in the office. He did not want the second story to become Miles’s personality. He told Alicia that on the sectional, night three. She said I won’t make him the messenger again. He said he already was. She said then we stop. Stop was a verb they could share. They stopped the man. They did not stop the house. The house had drawings on the fridge. One drawing was a family with too many arms. Daniel left it up. Too many arms was a child’s theory. Theories could stay. Jackets could not.
Renee took Miles to a movie so the island could be an island. Daniel and Alicia sat with the mail put away. He asked if she had wanted to leave. She said no. He asked if she had wanted him to catch the site. She said she had wanted a Saturday that was not a invoice. He said the invoice was the roof. She said the roof is still leaky in the hall. He looked at her. The hall leak was real. The man was real. Both could be true. He said I will fix the leak. She said that is not a trade. He said I know. Knowing was crowded. They let it be crowded. Miles came back with popcorn in his hair. Popcorn was a rescue. They picked it out. Picking was a family. The family was damaged and still picking. Alicia held that. Daniel held the sleeve of the boy’s actual jacket, the small one, and did not compare it out loud.
Julian’s transfer went through. A nurse said he looked relieved. Alicia did not want the relief. Relief was a cousin of getting away. She wanted absence. Absence arrived. The chair stayed empty. She moved the chair to the other wall so the empty would not be a picture of the old empty. Daniel saw the move and said nothing. Nothing was a gift. She said thank you for the nothing. He said don’t thank me for a chair. She stopped. Stopping was progress. The hall leak got a bucket and then a patch. The patch held. Holding was the theme. They were seeing what held.
