A year and a half after the watch on the island, Alicia said Julian’s name on purpose, once, so it would not be a ghost. Daniel said I know the name. She said I don’t want it in the drawers. He said then it’s said. They did dishes. The name did not return at bedtime. Bedtime was a chapter and a glass of water. Miles wanted the water too full. Daniel poured it down a finger. The finger was a trick. Miles laughed. The laugh was the sound the kitchen had lost on a Saturday and got back in pieces. Alicia heard the piece. She did not claim it. Claims were how people took a laugh hostage. The laugh was his. She washed the egg pan. The pan was hers. The division was silly and soothing. They could be silly. Silly was a country past what man. She wanted to live there. She was visiting. Visits could become a residence. She was patient. Patient was Helen’s word. She used it without the card.

The drawings on the fridge multiplied. A truck. A family. A watch that Miles drew from memory, huge, and then asked to take down. Alicia asked why. He said it wasn’t ours. She said then down. He took it down. Daniel, told, said good. Good traveled. The empty magnet stayed. Empty magnets were fine. They held nothing. Nothing was the correct load.

Alicia’s hoops caught the light in the morning and Daniel noticed and did not say a line. Noticing without a line was a marriage muscle. He poured her coffee in the mug he had refused for a month. The refusal was over. She saw the mug and did not make a speech. Speeches had failed in worse rooms. She drank. Miles came in wearing his own hoodie, sleeves at the wrists, correct. He asked for cereal. Cereal was on time. The campaign of normal had a breakfast. They ate. The backyard was green. The slider stuck and Daniel fixed the track with a tool that was his. Tools were a language. He spoke it. Alicia handed him the screw. The screw fit. Fitting was a small pardon neither of them called a pardon. They called it a door. The door opened. Miles ran out. Running out was six, then eight. Eight still ran. They let him.

Julian did not appear in a lot or a file again. Absence aged. Aging was what Alicia had wanted. She did not check a profile. Checking was a hunger. She was not hungry for that chair. She was hungry for a Saturday that stayed. Daniel took them. The site complained less because the lull had taught them he would leave anyway. Leaving a site for a house was the inversion of the old clock. He liked the inversion. He did not announce it. Announcing was a trophy. Trophies were commercials. He fixed a track. He poured a mug. He threw out a patch that had already been thrown out. The second throw was Miles. The first had been Miles too. The boy was thorough. Thorough had saved them from a longer lie. Daniel could hate the thoroughness and bless it. He did both. Both was adult. He was thirty-nine and then forty. Adult arrived late and useful.
