Renee’s bad fries became a monthly thing. Alicia went. She said the chair was still empty. Renee said good. They did not workshop Julian. Workshopping was how a name got a second life. The name had one life. It was over. Fries were the second life they chose. Daniel did not mind the monthly. He said tell her the roof held. Alicia told her. Renee said Pat should run the country. They laughed. Laughter in a lot was clean. Alicia drove home. The house lights were on. Daniel had done baths. Baths were a share. She kissed Miles’s wet hair. He said the soap was wrong. She said then tomorrow the other soap. Tomorrow was a promise she could keep. Keeping promises was the inversion of a clock. She kept it.
The water bill came higher. Daniel complained and then fixed a drip. The drip was the toilet. Miles flushed it to test. The test failed and then worked. Science, Daniel said. Miles said science is cool. Cool had been the jacket word. It was a science word now. Alicia let the word move. Words could move if you did not nail them to a morning. She did not nail them. She made the eggs. Eggs were religion. Religion held.
A Christmas photo showed the three of them on the sectional, no fort, no crown, ordinary sweaters. Alicia ordered two prints. One for the fridge. One for Daniel’s mother, who did not know the jacket story and did not need it. Need was a boundary. The mother said they looked rested. Rested was a compliment Alicia took. Rested was true enough. True enough was a stage. They were in it. Miles wore the small hoodie in the photo. Sleeves at the wrists. Correct size. Daniel’s band caught the flash. The band was still on. On was a fact. Facts she trusted more than speeches. She put the print up. The ambitious arms drawing stayed at the edge. Edges. Honest. She touched the edge once and went to baste a turkey she was only adequate at. Adequate was a glory. They ate adequate turkey. Nobody left a coat on a chair. The chairs had people. The people were theirs.
Two years after the island, Miles did a book report on a truck. He read it to them at the island. Daniel lowered the mail. Alicia turned from the counter. The echo was there and kind. Miles finished. They clapped. Clapping was new and not sarcastic. He bowed, badly. The bow was his. Alicia did not correct it. Corrections were for math and leaks. A bow could be bad. Bad bows were safe. Daniel said the truck sounded fast. Miles said it is. They cleared the bowls together. Clearing was a household. The household had survived a huge watch and a question. What man. A name. A box in a lot. A transfer. A sweater on a chair. A father on Saturdays. A boy at the correct size. A mother who passed the milk. The report was done. The day was done. They left the island clean. Clean was a ending. It was also a morning, waiting. They could meet it. They had practice. Practice was the game, and they had played it, Saturday by Saturday, long after the jacket had gone back to the man who was not coming over.
