That mattered too. “You don’t have to decide anything,” he said. Rachel looked at him. A year earlier he would have tried to convert vulnerability into reassurance.

Now he let the feeling exist. She closed the door after he left and cried for reasons she could not separate. In August, Rachel agreed to a trial return. Not full restoration. David moved back into the guest room.

Sophie celebrated by making a sign that said DADDY SLEEPS HERE AGAIN and taping it crookedly to the hallway wall. Rachel nearly asked her to remove it. Then she didn’t. Children mark safety with crude little banners.

Let her. The first month was awkward. David slept downstairs. Rachel locked the bedroom door sometimes without meaning to.

If his phone buzzed late, her body reacted before her brain. If he said “work dinner, she went quiet.” David learned not to call those reactions punishment. They were injury. He had caused them.

One Saturday, almost exactly a year after Natalie had been in the house, Rachel woke at three in the morning and found David sitting at the kitchen table alone. He was staring at a glass of water. “What’s wrong?” she asked. He looked up.

“Tomorrow is the date.” Rachel knew immediately. The anniversary of the Saturday. She had not realized he remembered.

“Yes.” “I don’t know what you need.” Rachel sat across from him.

“Neither do I.” For a while, they listened to the refrigerator hum. Then David said, “I hate that Sophie was the one who exposed me.” Rachel tensed.

He continued quickly. “Not because I wish she hadn’t.” Because I made her carry information she never should have had. Rachel’s shoulders eased.

“That part still makes me angrier than the kissing sometimes.” “I know.” “No. I don’t think you do.”

David nodded. “Then tell me.” Rachel did. She told him how it felt to hear Sophie apologize for wearing the dress.

How terrifying it was to realize the child thought truth had broken the family. How disgusted Rachel felt knowing David had asked her not to mention Natalie to Grandma. How close that came to teaching Sophie that adults can request secrecy when they are ashamed. David cried then.
