No hug. No forgiveness speech. No cinematic closure. Rachel boarded her flight twenty minutes later and realized she had gone six gates before thinking about Natalie again.

That was closure enough. When Sophie turned sixteen, she found an old photo of herself in Rachel’s cloud archive. Not wearing the dress. Just from the same year. She was standing in the living room with missing front teeth and a plastic tiara.

“Was this around the time Dad moved out?” she asked. Rachel looked over her shoulder. “Yes.” Sophie was old enough now to understand more. “Was there another woman?” The question came quietly.

Rachel had always known it would arrive. “Yes.” Sophie stared at the photo. “Did I know?”

Rachel sat beside her. “You saw something you didn’t understand.” Sophie looked up. “What?” Rachel took a breath.

“You found a dress that belonged to her.” Sophie’s eyes widened. A memory flickered. “Oh my God.”

Rachel almost laughed at the teenage horror. “I wore it, didn’t I?” “Yes.” Sophie covered her face.

“No.” “Yes.” “Please tell me there are no pictures.” Rachel laughed.

“No pictures.” Sophie lowered her hands slowly. “Is that how you found out?” “Yes.”

The humor left her face. “Because of me?” Rachel answered immediately.

“No.” Sophie looked uncertain. “Because Dad and Natalie made choices.” You told the truth without knowing it was truth.

Sophie sat with that. “Did Dad ask me not to tell?” Rachel did not soften the answer. “He asked you not to mention her visit to Grandma.”

Not directly to me. Sophie’s face tightened. “That’s still gross.” “Yes.”
