“If you want me to believe you, you will not delete one message, make one call, warn Natalie, or ask Sophie what she remembers.” You will hand me your phone. David went completely still. There are moments in a marriage when refusal can be louder than confession. This was one. Rachel watched the calculation move across his face.

Privacy. Principle. Anger. Deflection.

All the usual doors guilty people try first. “Rachel, I’m not giving you my phone like I’m a teenager.” She nodded. “Okay.”

Her calm startled him. “Okay?” “Yes. She walked toward the hallway.”

“Where are you going?” “To sleep in Sophie’s room.” “Rachel. She turned.”

“You don’t have to give me your phone,” she said. “And I don’t have to pretend that choice means nothing.” David slept on the sectional. Rachel did not sleep at all. She lay beside Sophie beneath glow-in-the-dark stars taped to the ceiling, listening to her daughter breathe softly and trying not to imagine Natalie moving through the house below.

Around two in the morning, Sophie stirred. “Mommy?” “I’m here.” “Did I make Daddy mad?”

Rachel’s throat closed. “No, baby.” “Because I took the dress?” “No.”

Sophie rolled closer. “I asked before.” Rachel froze.

“What do you mean?” “I asked Daddy if I could wear it when Miss Natalie left it.” Rachel sat up slightly. “When was that?”

“Sunday morning.” The room tilted again. David had told her Natalie left early Sunday. “Was Natalie still here when you asked?”

Sophie nodded sleepily. “Where was she?” “In your room.” Rachel stopped breathing.

Sophie closed her eyes again. “She was looking for her earring.” The words entered Rachel’s body like cold water. “What earring?”
