“One of your sweatshirts and some gym shorts.” Rachel almost smiled at the absurdity. “My clothes.” “Just to get home.”

“Which sweatshirt? He frowned.” “I don’t remember.”

Rachel stood. David immediately tensed. She went upstairs to their bedroom closet and opened the dresser drawer where she kept old sweatshirts.

One was missing. Gray Ohio State hoodie. Rachel returned downstairs. “Call her,” she said.

David looked up sharply. “What?” “Call Natalie.” “No.”

The answer came too fast. Rachel sat again. “Why not?” “Because this is between us.” Rachel looked at the dress.

“No. Apparently this is between at least three adults and one child.” “Rachel, she doesn’t need to get dragged into a marital fight.” The sentence was almost impressive in its moral inversion.

“Dragged in?” Rachel asked. “Her dress is sitting on my table.”

David rubbed his temples. “I am trying to keep this from becoming uglier than it is.” Rachel’s breath caught.

“Then tell me how ugly it is.” He did not. That was enough for the night. Rachel stood and said, “You’re sleeping downstairs.”

David looked stunned, which angered her more than resistance would have. “Rachel.” “No.” “I did not sleep with her.” The sentence came without being asked.

Rachel stared at him. “That is the first time you said that.” His face changed again. “I thought it was obvious from what I told you.”

“Nothing is obvious anymore. He opened his mouth.” Rachel picked up the dress.
