Dr. Bell met Isaiah in a room with puppets, art supplies, building blocks, and a child-sized couch shaped like something from a cartoon spaceship. Nicole and Adrian both attended the first twenty minutes. They told Isaiah the doctor talked to kids about feelings when families had “big changes.” Isaiah accepted this with the practical adaptability of a five-year-old.
Afterward, Dr. Bell spoke to the parents separately.
Isaiah, she said, did not appear to have witnessed explicit sexual behavior or any dramatic confrontation before the breakfast scene. He knew Tessa as “Dad’s work lady.” He remembered being in the car with her twice. Once she bought him apple juice at a cafe. Once she sat in the front passenger seat while Adrian drove her home. He also remembered seeing Adrian hug her “a long time” near a parking garage after telling Isaiah to wait in the car.
That last detail hit both parents differently. Nicole closed her eyes. Adrian looked like he might be sick.
Dr. Bell held up a hand. “Do not ask him for more detail yourselves. He has already given me enough to understand the issue. He is not currently distressed by Tessa. He is distressed by the tension between the two of you and by the sudden change in where his father sleeps.”
Nicole looked at Adrian. “He noticed you hugging her.” “I know.” “You left him alone in a car.”
“For two minutes. The doors were locked.” Dr. Bell interrupted before Nicole could answer. “This is exactly why we need to separate marital accountability from Isaiah’s emotional care.”
She was right, which was inconvenient. The next two weeks gave Nicole facts she did not want and needed anyway.
Her medical tests were clear. Financial records showed no hidden bank account, but there were seven hotel charges disguised under client-entertainment categories on Adrian’s corporate card and two restaurant charges paid personally. He had bought Tessa a $420 bracelet in July and classified it in his own mind as a “birthday gift between friends.” Nicole nearly threw the spreadsheet across the room when he said that. Tessa’s forgotten belongings turned out to have a simple explanation nested inside an ugly one.
