“Yes.” She fed the final page into the machine.

That evening they ordered Thai food and watched a terrible comedy after Isaiah went to bed. Nothing ceremonial happened. Nicole preferred it that way. The marriage had survived not through spectacle but through enough ordinary days in which truth kept arriving on time. On their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, Adrian and Nicole did not renew their vows.

Friends suggested it. Yvonne thought it might be beautiful. Michelle joked that Adrian should have to write new vows with legal review. Nicole said no.

The original vows had not failed because the words were outdated. They had failed because one person violated them. She did not need new language to make the marriage real again. Instead they took a long weekend in Savannah, walked through warm evening streets, ate seafood by the river, and talked about everything except survival. At dinner the second night, Adrian raised his glass.

“To the life after truth,” he said. Nicole looked at him for a moment. Then she touched her glass to his. “To choosing it,” she replied. Years later, when Isaiah was preparing to leave for college, he stood in the same bright kitchen on another Saturday morning with luggage open near the island and a navy blazer hanging over one arm.

He was eighteen now, taller than Adrian, with his mother’s eyes and his father’s easy smile. He had an internship orientation the following week and wanted to know whether the blazer made him look “too corporate.” Nicole adjusted the collar. Adrian handed him a watch, not expensive, just a simple silver one he had worn when he first started his career. Isaiah fastened it and lifted his wrist.

“Do I look like a boss?” he asked. The room went quiet for half a second. Then all three laughed. Isaiah frowned. “What?”

Nicole shook her head. “Nothing, baby.” Adrian smiled, but his eyes had gone wet.
