“Because that would make staying my decision.” Nicole looked at him for a long moment. That was another brick in the rebuild.
The professional consequences continued too. Adrian’s firm required him to repay part of the improperly classified expenses and issued a written disciplinary notice. Tessa’s reassignment became permanent before she resigned months later. Rumors moved through the office, though most coworkers were too polite to ask directly. Adrian experienced, perhaps for the first time, what it felt like to have people reconsider his character in rooms he could not control.
He told Dr. Lewis that humiliation made him want to quit. Lewis asked whether quitting would serve growth or simply relocate embarrassment. Adrian stayed.
He completed the ethics training, repaid the expenses, and accepted a year without promotion. He also stopped leaning on Nicole for reassurance about work. Once, after a particularly uncomfortable executive meeting, he started to tell her that everyone looked at him like he was contaminated. Then he caught himself. “Sorry,” he said. “That’s not yours to carry.”
Nicole appreciated that more than the apology itself. The question of Tessa’s culpability remained complicated. Nicole never excused her. Tessa had known Adrian was married and had interacted with Nicole face-to-face. But as months passed, Nicole stopped needing Tessa to suffer in proportion to her own pain.
That need had been intense at first. She had imagined Tessa embarrassed at work, alone in another city, forced to explain herself to friends. Eventually those fantasies became exhausting. One afternoon Renee asked what Nicole would gain if Tessa’s life collapsed completely.
Nicole answered honestly. “Proof that consequences are real.” “And are they not real already?” Nicole thought about the reassignment, resignation, lost professional trust, and the fact that Tessa now carried an affair into every future relationship whether she disclosed it or not. “I guess they are.”
“Then maybe justice doesn’t require you to supervise them.” Nicole stopped checking Tessa’s social media after that.
