Jack sat in the green room with six other finalists and tried not to compare shoes. His were clean but not new. A boy across from him tapped silent rhythms on his knee. A girl with a velvet headband stared at the ceiling as if memorizing cracks. Someone's parent kept peeking through the doorway until a proctor asked them, gently and finally, to wait elsewhere.

Jack thought of Eleanor at home above the hardware store, probably pretending not to watch the clock. He thought of Mr. Delgado, who had refused to come—"If I sit in that lobby I will correct someone's posture with my eyes and cause an incident"—but who had texted that morning a single sentence: Play the room, not your fear.

Jack closed his eyes and heard, unbidden, the lobby grand he had not been allowed to touch. He wondered what it would have sounded like under his hands, with everyone listening, with Principal Harrison's doubt hanging in the lemon-oil air. Part of him was glad Ms. Blake's phone had interrupted. Another part of him—the part that understood unfinished phrases—felt the interruption like a held breath that never quite resolved.

At five-forty, the results were posted on a corkboard outside the green room with the ceremonial cruelty common to schools that believed transparency was kindness.

Jack stood on his toes to read.

His name was third on a list of three scholarship offers.

For a moment the letters did not make sense. Then they did, and the sense was almost too large for his chest. He did not shout. He did not cry in front of the other children. He walked to the bathroom, locked a stall, and sat on the closed lid with his forehead against his knees until the shaking slowed. When he came out, Ms. Blake was waiting in the hallway with Principal Harrison beside her.
