They returned to the lobby as evening settled its blue weight against the windows. The wreath still hung. The registration table was half cleared. A few families lingered, reading the posted results with joy or the stiff faces of deferred hope. The black grand waited where it had waited all afternoon, glossy and patient.

Jack sat. This time his hands did not hover.

He played—not the Chopin, not the Bach, not the packet piece—but a simple melody Eleanor used to hum while knitting, a tune without a famous name, something that might have been half folk song and half invention. Under his fingers it became larger without becoming fancy. It filled the lobby the way warm light fills a room you did not realize had gone cold. Parents turned. A janitor paused with a mop. Principal Harrison stood very still, the deep green of his tie suddenly looking less like authority and more like the color of something growing.

When Jack finished, no one clapped at first. Then someone did, softly, and others joined, not with the roar of a concert hall but with the gratitude of people who had been given an unexpected gift at the end of a long winter day.

Jack stood, flushed beneath his freckles, and found Eleanor near the doors in her best coat, eyes bright. He ran to her—not dramatically, not in slow motion, just with the practical urgency of a boy who needed to put his arms around the person who had kept the heat low so he could keep the music high.

"I got it," he whispered into her shoulder.

"I know," Eleanor whispered back. "I heard you from the stairs."
