"You take care of my boy," she told the receptionist, and then, seeing Harrison emerge from the hallway, added, "And you—don't let this place forget what it's for."

"I won't," Harrison said, and this time it sounded less like a promise to her than a promise extracted from his own history.

Ms. Blake, during those hard months, adjusted Jack's workload without reducing her belief in him. "Technique can wait a week," she said. "Your grandmother cannot. Go home. Practice what you can. Come back when the house is breathing again."

Jack came back. The house breathed. The music, which had never truly left, stepped forward again like a friend who had been waiting in the next room.

On the fifth anniversary of Jack's final scholarship audition, Westbridge invited him—now sixteen, taller, still freckled, still somehow carrying the weather of that first winter in his posture—to speak briefly at the opening of the revised access program's annual evening. The program had grown. It had a name that was not named after Jack, which Ms. Blake and Harrison had both insisted upon. It was called the Threshold Fund, because thresholds were places of danger and invitation both.

Jack stood in the lobby near the grand piano, older students and younger ones gathered, parents in chairs, board members trying to look moved in ways that photographed well. He wore the cable-knit forest-green sweater Eleanor had made. Principal Harrison, silver hair thinner now, charcoal suit familiar as a second skin, stood to the side with Margaret. Ms. Blake sat in the front row in a black dress, chestnut hair still pinned with silver, eyes attentive.

Jack had been asked to talk about opportunity. He disliked the word when it arrived pre-packaged. He looked at the piano instead.
