"Well?" Mr. Delgado demanded.

"I got it."

A pause. Then the old man said, roughly, "Of course you did," as if the outcome had been a weather report he had already checked. "Now the hard part starts. Do not become a person who only sounds good in buildings that impress you."

"I won't."

"Come Sunday," Mr. Delgado said. "We will celebrate by fixing your trills."

Jack hung up smiling. Eleanor pretended not to watch him from the sink. When he went to his room, she stood alone for a moment with both hands on the counter and whispered thank you to whoever might be listening—her daughter, perhaps, or the stubborn grace that had kept a pawnshop keyboard working through three winters.

Jack lay on his bed and stared at the ceiling cracks he had long ago decided looked like a river system. He thought of his mother, Claire, who had sung off-key in the car and cried the first time she heard him play a full song without stopping. Claire had worked double shifts at a clinic reception desk and still found Saturdays to sit beside him at St. Mark's, knitting while he practiced, the same needles Eleanor now used. When Claire got sick, the knitting continued in waiting rooms. When Claire died, the knitting continued at the funeral in Eleanor's lap like a refusal to let hands go empty.

Jack kept, in a shoebox under his bed, a photograph of Claire at nineteen, laughing with a paper crown from a birthday restaurant. He also kept a single voicemail he had never deleted, though he listened to it only on mornings when courage needed evidence. In it, Claire said: "Hey, little maestro. I'm running late, but I heard you through the phone when Grandma called. That soft part? Keep that. The world has enough loud. Love you. Buy milk if you get home first."
