Ava heard a car door close outside. The three of them went quiet. A second later came the muffled sound of footsteps on the front walk. Ava's first thought was Diane. Her mother had changed her mind.

The timing felt impossible, almost cruel, but she also felt an irrational surge of relief. Diane would enter, see Ava's face, and immediately understand that something terrible had happened. Ava would not have to carry the first sentence alone. Then she remembered Lily saying Diane knew about the pregnancy. The relief vanished.

Ryan stood very slowly. Ava looked at him. "Why are you standing?" He did not answer. There was a soft sound at the front door.

Not the doorbell. A key entering the lock. Ava frowned. Diane still had a key to the house. Ava had given it to her when they moved in, for emergencies and dog-sitting.

Normally Diane rang the bell anyway. The lock turned. Ryan went pale. Ava saw it happen in real time.

The blood seemed to leave his face, and his eyes fixed on the hallway with a terror that did not match the simple fact of his mother-in-law arriving. Lily noticed too. "Ryan?" she whispered. He said nothing. The front door opened.

Ava's heart began pounding again. From where she stood beside the dining table, the open archway gave her a clear view of the foyer. At first she saw only the edge of a camel-colored coat moving past the doorway. Then Diane stepped into the light. Ava's mind registered familiar details automatically.

Shoulder-length honey-blonde hair, smooth despite the damp air. Pearl earrings. Navy fabric beneath the coat. The controlled posture Diane wore into every room, whether it was a listing appointment or a family argument. Then Ava saw her mother's hand.

It was resting over her stomach. Ava's gaze dropped. The world stopped. Diane was visibly pregnant. Not slightly fuller.

Not wearing a loose coat that created an illusion. Beneath the navy wrap dress was the unmistakable rounded shape of a pregnancy advanced enough that no one standing in that room could misunderstand it. For one suspended second, nobody moved. Diane remained in the doorway, one hand over the curve of her stomach and the other hanging beside the open edge of her camel coat. Her face was grave, ashamed, and unreadable.

Ryan saw her first in the way that mattered. His entire body locked. Whatever panic Ava had seen earlier became something deeper now, a fear so immediate that his lips parted without sound. Ava turned toward him. Then Lily followed Ava's gaze.

The younger sister's crying stopped as abruptly as if someone had cut a wire. Her swollen eyes widened, first at Ryan's face and then at Diane's stomach. Ava could not make the pieces form a sentence. Her mother was pregnant.

Her forty-nine-year-old mother was standing in Ava's hallway visibly pregnant while Ryan looked as though he had just seen the end of the world. No one asked a question. No one offered an explanation. The room seemed to widen around them: Ava standing rigid beside the polished table, shock and rage fixed across her face; Lily beside her chair, tears still wet on her cheeks, one hand unconsciously hovering near her own stomach; Ryan frozen between them, pale with fear; and Diane framed by the open doorway, silent beneath the warm hallway light, one hand resting protectively over her rounded belly.

All four of them remained visible in the same terrible tableau. Ava looked from her mother's pregnant stomach to Ryan's bloodless face. Lily looked at Ryan too. Ryan could not look at either sister.

Diane said nothing. And in the silence, the stunned expressions of the three people at the table changed as they faced the woman in the doorway, each of them realizing that the night was not finished revealing what their family had become.
