The rain had been falling since before supper, a soft Pennsylvania rain that silvered the windows of the townhouse and made the streetlights blur into pale coins along the wet pavement. In the downstairs family room, the navy sectional held the day's quiet weight: a folded blanket, a half-finished puzzle of sea animals, the faint scent of laundry detergent rising from the basket of towels Elena Delgado had brought down to fold. Framed school photos lined the wall above the toy basket—Sofia's kindergarten portrait with the missing front tooth, last year's class picture where her braids stuck out like parentheses of joy. The reading lamp cast a warm circle over Marco's laptop, and beyond that circle the room dimmed into ordinary evening.

Sofia stood in the doorway wearing an adult woman's long pale-pink cardigan that dragged at her ankles. The sleeves swallowed her hands. A sparkly pendant necklace hung too low against her chest, swinging whenever she moved. In both small palms she cradled a floral perfume bottle as if it were a treasure rescued from a shipwreck.

"Daddy, do I smell pretty?" she asked, cheerful as a bell.

Marco looked up from the laptop, short black hair catching the lamplight, burgundy sweatshirt soft from too many washes. He smiled the smile that belonged only to Sofia.

"Very pretty. Maybe a little too much."

Elena paused with a towel half-folded against her gray cardigan. Her long dark-brown hair was gathered in a low ponytail, and she turned toward the bottle with the slow attention of someone who had learned, over years of motherhood, to notice what did not belong.

"Where did you get that perfume?"

Sofia's braids bobbed. Dark wavy hair framed her bright face.
