Marco came to counseling with Elena on Thursday evenings in a brick office near the library. They talked about secrecy and protection and the difference between shielding a spouse and sidelining her. The counselor, a woman with kind eyes and no patience for euphemism, asked Marco what he had been afraid would happen if he told Elena on day one. Marco said, "I was afraid she would choose rage over her father and then lose him twice." Elena said, "You do not get to manage my character like a project." They left each session tired and slightly more married than when they entered.

In the car after the third session, parked under a streetlight near the library, Elena said, "Tell me what you and Carmen talked about on those drives. Not the summary. The texture."

Marco stared at the windshield. "She talked about AA meetings. About a woman named Denise who makes terrible coffee and saves people anyway. She talked about the grocery store—how she stocks yogurt and avoids the liquor aisle like it is a cliff. She asked about you constantly. What you were like as a mother. Whether you still burned garlic when you were distracted. Whether you still hummed when you folded clothes. I answered carefully. I felt like a translator between two countries at war."

"And Papa?"

"He told her stories about you as a child. How you lined up your shoes by color. How you corrected his English homework when he was studying for a promotion. He told her he was proud of both of you in different keys. He made her promise not to drink at his funeral. She laughed and cried and said she promised."

Elena wiped her face with the back of her wrist. "I should have been hearing those stories myself."

"Yes," Marco said. "You should have. That failure is mine as much as hers."
