For a stretch of seconds Elena could not decide whether relief or fury would arrive first. Relief that the woman was not a stranger with a motel key. Fury that the woman was worse than a stranger—family she had exiled for reasons that still felt, in her bones, like justice. She paced from the sectional to the toy basket to the framed photos and back, the gray cardigan tight across her shoulders.

"Say it again," she said. "Say her name and what you did, slowly, as if I am a person who deserves complete sentences."

Marco did. He started with the phone call in the grocery store parking lot three weeks earlier—Carmen's voice shaking, the sober house address, the request that sounded small and was not. He described the first drive: Carmen smelling of toothpaste and nerves, apologizing every mile, asking whether Elena still took her coffee with too much milk. He described Ricardo in the hospital bed, thinner than the man who had walked Elena down the aisle. He described the perfume left in the cup holder after a sudden rainstorm when Carmen had rushed for the bus with her jacket over her head.

"I almost called you from the hospital parking garage the first night," Marco said. "I had the phone in my hand. Carmen begged me to wait until she could be the one to say it. I chose wrong. I chose her fear over your right to know."

Elena stopped pacing. "Did you touch her?"

The question was ugly and necessary. Marco's face tightened with understanding rather than offense.

"No," he said. "Not like that. Never. I hugged her once when she cried so hard she could not buckle the seat belt. That is the entire inventory of contact. You can ask her. You can ask the nurses who saw us arrive. I will not ask you to skip the question just because it humiliates us both."
