Elena nodded once, a sharp motion. The affair narrative loosened its claws by a degree, then dug in elsewhere—around pride, around exclusion, around the particular pain of being protected like a child in your own marriage.

"You decided I could not handle my sister," she said.

"I decided I could not handle your pain," Marco answered. "I dressed it up as protection. It was cowardice with good intentions, which is still cowardice."

Elena sat. The navy cushion sighed. She looked at her hands—the hands that folded towels, braided Sofia's hair, signed field trip forms—and wondered how hands could keep performing normalcy while a life rearranged itself.

"Continue," she said. "All of it. Do not skip the parts where you look bad."

Elena stood so quickly the sectional cushion sighed. She walked to the window and stared at the rain-streaked glass without seeing the street. Four years. Four years of silence. Four years of birthday dates that she crossed off in her calendar with a pencil so hard the paper tore. Four years of telling people she was an only child now, in the ways that mattered.

"You brought Carmen into our car," she said to the window. "Into the air our daughter breathes. And you did not tell me."
