"Yes."

"And Papa should not be dying."

Marco turned toward her. "That one I cannot fix."

Elena's throat closed. She let herself cry then, finally, the kind of crying that had nothing to do with perfume or suspicion and everything to do with time's blunt arithmetic. Marco held her without explaining. Outside, the neighborhood settled into its ordinary Tuesday quiet. Inside, something between them that had cracked began the long work of learning whether it could hold weight again.

The first week after the reveal was a study in domestic weather systems. Elena cooked dinners and washed Sofia's hair and signed permission slips while a second conversation ran continuously under her ribs. She found herself checking Marco's phone once—only once—standing in the bathroom with the door locked, scrolling through recent calls until she saw Carmen's name repeated like a drumbeat. She put the phone down without deleting anything, washed her hands as if she had touched something unclean, and hated the version of herself that needed evidence after the confession had already arrived.

Marco noticed the distance and did not pretend not to. He came home on time. He narrated his day in more detail than usual, which should have helped and sometimes felt like a man reading a hostage statement. At night he asked whether she wanted to talk and accepted the answer when she said not yet. Elena appreciated the acceptance and resented needing it.

Sofia, attuned as children are to the pressure changes in a house, became clingy. She asked Elena to stay for one more story, then one more. She brought drawings to Marco at his laptop—hearts, dinosaurs, a figure in a long pink sweater labeled ME. One evening she asked, with devastating casualness, "Are you and Daddy mad at the perfume lady?"
