Maya felt another wave of weakness move through her body.

She placed one hand flat on the armrest.

Lena noticed immediately and leaned forward.

"Maya, are you dizzy?"

"A little."

Lena's tone sharpened.

"Captain, she needs safe food or medical evaluation."

Clare said, "She has glucose tablets."

"She already took one," Lena replied. "That is not a meal."

Captain Mallerie turned back to Maya.

"If you are medically unable to fly, we can have you removed and evaluated before departure."

The sentence sounded helpful for half a second.

Then Maya heard what was beneath it.

Removed before departure.

The fastest way to solve the airline's problem was not to return her meal.

It was to remove her from the aircraft.

"I am able to fly if your crew gives me the meal I reserved," Maya said.

"The meal has already been served to the wrong passenger."

Victoria picked up her water glass.

"Captain, she is clearly unstable."

Lena snapped, "She is calm. You are eating her medical meal."

Victoria's face turned red.

"How dare you?"

"I'm a nurse," Lena said. "I dare because I know what happens when people ignore symptoms."

Captain Mallerie took a breath through his nose.

"Miss Ortiz, if medical assistance is required, the crew will request it. Until then, I need you to stop escalating."

Lena's mouth opened, then closed.

She looked at Maya, furious but careful.

Maya understood the trap.

Anyone who spoke for her became part of the disruption.

Anyone who recorded became interference.

Anyone who questioned the crew became a threat to order.

Ethan's report was already building itself around them.

Captain Mallerie leaned closer to Maya.

"Miss Williams, I am giving you a direct instruction. Turn off your phone, accept the alternative service, and stop challenging the crew's decisions."

Maya looked at him for a long moment.

"Captain, are you ordering me to stop recording evidence of discrimination and medical negligence?"

The cabin went silent again.

Captain Mallerie's eyes narrowed.

"I am ordering you to comply with crew instruction."

"Which instruction specifically? To stop recording? Why?"

"Because you are interfering with crew duties."

"I am seated. My phone is on my tray table. I am not blocking anyone. I am not yelling. I am not threatening anyone. What duty am I interfering with?"

Captain Mallerie did not answer immediately.

The older woman across the aisle whispered, "That's a fair question."

Her husband looked terrified, but this time he did not stop her.

Ethan stepped in.

"Captain, we are now beyond meal service. Passenger has refused multiple attempts at resolution."

Maya turned toward him.

"You mean I refused to sign a lie?"

Ethan ignored her.

"I recommend law enforcement meet the aircraft at JFK if she continues."

Lena's phone caught the words clearly.

Captain Mallerie's face closed.

"Miss Williams, if you continue to refuse, I will have authorities meet this aircraft upon arrival."

Maya's throat tightened.

She thought of the morning meeting.

She thought of Naomi.

Of her staff.

Of every headline that could begin with Black woman detained after flight disturbance.

She knew how quickly a false frame could travel.

But she also knew that if she turned off the phone now, Ethan's report would become the only official story.

She touched the edge of her printed email.
