Ethan turned toward him.

"Sir, I advise you to lower your voice."

"My voice is fine."

Captain Mallerie's voice came over the speaker again.

This time not for the entire plane, but through the front cabin handset, amplified just enough from the galley speaker that first class could hear parts of it.

"Ethan, status."

Ethan lifted the handset near the curtain.

"Passenger remains noncompliant. Multiple passengers now interfering and recording."

Maya stood up, not fully, just enough to rise from the seat as far as her belt allowed.

Lena immediately touched her arm.

"Careful."

Maya nodded, then spoke toward the front.

"Captain Mallerie, this is Maya Williams in seat 1B. Before you classify me as noncompliant, I am asking you to review my confirmation email, the medical meal label, and the video evidence from passengers."

Ethan covered the handset.

"Sit down."

"I am seated."

"You are escalating."

"I am asking the captain to review evidence before involving police."

There was a pause.

Then Mallerie's voice came back through the handset, clipped and impatient.

"Miss Williams, you have been instructed to comply. This matter will be reviewed after landing."

Maya replied, "Will police be waiting for me at JFK?"

Another pause.

Ethan looked furious.

Captain Mallerie said, "If the crew determines it is necessary."

"Yes," Lena said clearly.

Ethan looked at her, then back at Maya.

"This could have been handled quietly."

Maya's voice was calm.

"It should have been handled correctly."

The aircraft dipped lower.

Wheels lowered beneath them with a heavy mechanical sound.

Victoria stared out the window, her phone locked in both hands.

Clare strapped into the front jump seat, breathing too fast.

Ethan sat opposite her, report tablet on his lap, no longer typing.

Behind the cockpit door, Captain Mallerie watched the runway lights approach and knew corporate legal might be waiting before the police were.

Maya rested one hand on her phone and the other on the confirmation email.

The wheels hit the runway at JFK just after midnight.

No one in first class clapped.

As the aircraft slowed, Lena's phone buzzed again and again.

She looked down, then looked at Maya.

"Five million views," she said.

Before Maya could answer, Clare's work phone lit up in the galley with a message from Crestline Operations.

Crew of Flight 608: Do not deplane until met by corporate security. All devices and reports preserved.

Clare read it and went white.

Ethan saw the message at the same time.

Victoria's phone rang again.

This time the caller ID was her husband.

Maya looked out at the lights of JFK.

Then back at the aisle where Clare, Ethan, and Captain Mallerie would soon have to explain what they had done before they knew who she was.

The flight was over.

The reckoning had just begun.

The plane rolled toward the gate in a silence that did not belong to air travel.

Normally, this was the part where people checked watches, gathered chargers, and complained about tight connections.

Tonight, first class sat still.

Even the passengers who had not recorded anything seemed afraid to move too quickly, as if the wrong gesture might disturb the evidence hanging in the air.

Clare remained strapped into the jump seat, staring down at her work phone.

Ethan sat across from her, his tablet dark on his lap, his jaw tight.

Neither of them spoke.

The message from Crestline Operations had changed the cabin more than any announcement could have.

Do not deplane until met by corporate security.

All devices and reports preserved.

Maya watched them from 1B.
