Not control. The illusion of control had probably helped him ignore the marriage's deterioration in the first place. Agency was smaller. He could decide what he did next. He could set boundaries, protect his finances, protect Lucia, ask Sofia for truth, and delay irreversible decisions until his nervous system stopped behaving as if the house were on fire.

Sofia wrote the affair timeline over three nights. She gave it to Miguel in a sealed envelope because she could not bear to watch him read it. He waited until Lucia was asleep and took it to the guest room. The timeline was six pages handwritten, beginning with lunches and phone calls, then the first kiss in Daniel's office parking garage, then a hotel in Galveston during a design conference, then the first overnight at the Alvarez house. There were eight overnights total. Daniel had used the guest room three times and the primary bedroom five.

Miguel had not expected the exact number to matter. It did.

Five nights in the bed where Lucia had climbed between him and Sofia during thunderstorms. Five nights under the framed wedding photograph they never took down. Five mornings when Daniel might have walked through the kitchen Miguel paid for, perhaps poured coffee from Miguel's machine, perhaps heard Lucia talk about school. Miguel had spent those mornings offshore checking voltage readings, signing permits, and calling home when the signal allowed. The parallel lives made him physically nauseated.

He read the timeline only once. Then he placed it in a lockbox with copies of financial statements and went outside. Sofia found him sitting on the back steps just before midnight. She did not sit beside him until he moved his hand slightly in permission. For a long time they watched insects circle the patio light. Eventually Miguel asked the question he had been avoiding.
