Rachel did not react as though that contradicted anything. She told him reconciliation and divorce were not moral grades, and that a person could acknowledge genuine change while still deciding the relationship had been damaged beyond what he wanted to carry. They reviewed the same practical subjects as before, but this time the numbers were less frightening because Miguel's shore job had stabilized and Sofia's business had grown. A shared-custody schedule could work. The house could likely be sold or refinanced. Lucia would be hurt by a separation, Rachel said, but children are not automatically healthier in an intact home than in two homes where adults are emotionally honest and predictable.

Miguel left with draft information but no filing. For three days he carried the possibility quietly, not to test Sofia or make her perform harder but because he needed to hear his own thoughts without her fear influencing them. He imagined an apartment ten minutes away, Lucia with a room in each home, holiday handoffs, Sofia eventually dating someone without secrecy, and himself no longer having to decide whether trust had returned enough. Some parts of the picture brought relief. Others felt like grief without anger to organize it.

On the fourth night, he told Sofia everything. She sat at the kitchen table while he explained the consultation, the custody possibilities, even the fact that he had pictured selling the house. Her face went pale, but she did not interrupt or accuse him of threatening her. When he finished, she asked only, "Do you want me to fight for us right now, or do you need me to let you think?"

Miguel had expected pleading and discovered that her restraint hurt more. "I need you to let me think," he said. Sofia nodded. "Then I will."

For the next two weeks, they continued living together under an honesty so sharp it almost resembled separation. Sofia did not increase affection to manipulate him. Miguel did not withdraw parenting to practice being gone. They attended Lucia's school concert, paid the electric bill, argued mildly about whether the backyard fence needed replacing, and went to therapy.
