Sofia told her older sister, Maribel, what had happened because she needed someone outside the marriage who would not let her rewrite the story. Maribel listened in silence, then asked only one question: "You brought him into the house with Lucia there?" When Sofia said yes, Maribel stood and walked to the sink before answering. "I love you," she said, facing away. "And that was cruel to Miguel and unfair to your daughter. Both things can be true at once."

Sofia had expected comfort. What she received was accountability without abandonment.

Miguel told his brother Javier two weeks later. Javier was five years older, a refinery mechanic in Pasadena, and had always distrusted offshore work because their father had spent half their childhood traveling construction jobs. His first reaction was anger so immediate that Miguel regretted calling him. Javier wanted Daniel's address. Miguel refused to give it.

"What are you going to do, fight him in a driveway?" Miguel asked. "Then Sofia gets to explain to Lucia why her dad got arrested?" Javier cursed.

"I need you to be my brother, not my weapon," Miguel said. That sentence settled him.
