He also realized necessity did not retroactively justify betrayal. Both truths could live together. In January of the second year, Miguel returned to Rachel Nguyen's office.

Sofia knew he was going. He wanted an updated understanding of divorce because staying out of fear was unacceptable to him. Rachel reviewed the finances, Lucia's routine, his new shore schedule, and the progress they had made in informal co-parenting. She explained what a separation might realistically look like now. Miguel left with enough information to know he could divorce without destroying Lucia's life or losing his role as a father.

That knowledge was strangely liberating. When he told Ben Cole, the therapist nodded. "A marriage is more voluntary when both people understand they can leave." Miguel later told Sofia the same thing.

"I'm not here because I think I'm trapped," he said. She started crying, but quietly. "I'm here because I'm still deciding yes." That became the language of their reconciliation: still deciding yes.

Not forever promised in a single dramatic act. Not erased history. A present-tense decision repeated often enough to become a pattern.
