Sofia received an invitation to a builder's networking dinner in downtown Houston. She told Miguel immediately and mentioned that Daniel's insurance firm sometimes attended similar events, though she did not know whether he would be there. Miguel's body reacted before his judgment did. He told her not to go.

Sofia went quiet. "Are you asking me or telling me?" "I'm telling you what I can handle." "That's not the same thing."

The argument escalated faster than either expected. Miguel accused her of prioritizing work over safety. Sofia accused him of turning transparency into permission-seeking. He reminded her that she had used work events to cover the affair. She replied that she had accepted consequences but could not spend the rest of her career avoiding every room Daniel might enter.

For two days, they barely spoke except about Lucia. In therapy, Ben asked Miguel what outcome he wanted. Miguel said he wanted Daniel nowhere near their lives. Ben asked whether control over Daniel's physical location was achievable. Miguel admitted it was not. Sofia offered a compromise: she would attend with a colleague, leave if Daniel approached her socially, and tell Miguel afterward if any contact occurred, but she would not scan the room like a fugitive.

Miguel agreed. Daniel was not there. The more important result was that Sofia had attended without secrecy and Miguel had survived not controlling the event. Trust returned in increments so small they were almost insulting.
