"Don't contact my family," Miguel said. "I haven't. I won't." Miguel nodded once and walked away.

He felt no triumph. Only release.

That night he told Sofia exactly what had happened. She listened without panic. When he finished, she said, "Thank you for telling me." Miguel realized the sentence was the opposite of the world they had once lived in. Information no longer arrived accidentally through children and forgotten objects. It moved directly between adults.

Lucia graduated from high school nine years after the watch incident. At the ceremony, Miguel and Sofia sat side by side in folding stadium seats under a Texas evening sky while their daughter crossed the stage in a blue gown. She had become confident, funny, and intolerant of manipulation in a way Miguel suspected was partly temperament and partly history. Afterward, she handed her phone to Javier and made him take family photographs. In one, Miguel's arm rested around Sofia's shoulders and Lucia stood between them holding her diploma.

The photograph did not prove anything. Families can smile while broken, and Miguel knew that better than most.
